How to become a Somaiya student

The K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies offers a number of Diploma programmes that address the learning needs of students of all backgrounds. There is a focus on languages: Sanskrit, Prakrit and Pali, as well as specialised Diplomas that are foundational for the respective fields and which also are qualifying criteria for eligibility to our Master’s programmes.

Diploma in Ashtadhyayi:

1. HSC or equivalent.  

2. Diploma in Paninian Grammar OR Equivalent.

3. Prior Knowledge of basic framework of Paninian Grammar and the sutra system of Ashtadhyayi is necessary.

4. Those exceptional candidates who have prior knowledge of Paninian Grammar but have not cleared any Diploma or equivalent course can be considered eligible on the basis of personal interview.

Diploma in Pali:

HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

Diploma in Jainology:

1. HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

2. Students should have cleared Certificate Course in Jainology.

 

Diploma in Yoga Therapy:

HSC or equivalent with one year Diploma in Yoga from any of the recognized institutes.

Diploma in Buddhist Studies:

HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

Diploma in Prakrit Language and Literature: 

1. HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

2. Students should have cleared Certificate Course in Prakrit Language and Literature.

Diploma in Samkhya-Yoga Systems of Indian Philosophy: 

1. HSC or equivalent. 

2. Prior knowledge of Sanskrit or Philosophy is not required.

Diploma in Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology:

HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

 

Diploma in Paninian Grammar: 

1. HSC or equivalent.  

2. Prior Knowledge of Basic Sanskrit acquired through any 6-12 month course or equivalent.

Diploma in Pali Grammar:

1. HSC or equivalent examination.

2. Knowledge of Pali language, assessed in an interview interested candidates will have to undergo.

 

Diploma in Sanskrit Language and Literature:

1. HSC or equivalent. 
2. Prior knowledge of Sanskrit is not required.

Diploma in Buddhist Sanskrit: Language and Literature:

HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

 

Post Graduate Diploma in Yogic Science:                   

1. Graduation from any discipline. 
2. Prior knowledge of Yoga is not required.

Diploma in Buddhist Analysis of Mind:

1. HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2) the principal teachings of the Buddha is a must.

2) Knowledge about the principal teachings of the Buddha is essential.

Students should have Diploma in Buddhist Studies, Certificate Course in Introduction to Buddhism or equivalent.

If they don't have either of these, an interview will be conducted.

 
 

Diploma in Archaeological Sources of Buddhist History:

HSC or equivalent examination (e.g. 10+2)

 
 

PG Diploma in Chinese Buddhism:

1. Graduate from any Recognised University.

2. Students who are studying in final year of graduation can also apply.

Submission of 100/- for diploma and 200/- for PG diploma (non-refundable in all cases) form fees through the payment gateway

Admission will be offered based on the merit and availability of seats taken together. The candidate will be communicated via email about his/her offered seat or waitlisted number.

  • A provisional seat will be offered based on the merit, and availability of seats. The candidate will be communicated via email about his/her status of admission whether confirmed or waitlisted.
  • A candidate who has been offered a provisional seat will need to pay the full fees as applicable for the programme, within 8 days of the receipt of the offer letter, to secure the confirmed admission.
  • Candidate who does not pay the requisite amount as per the deadline will lose his/her claim on the confirmed seat during that phase.
  • Provisional admission needs to be confirmed within four working days of declaration of result of graduation or equivalent examinations, by paying the remaining balance of fees.
  • The final confirmation of admission is subject to physical verification of the documents. In case of non-availability of valid documents, the confirmation of the admission will result in cancellation.
  • Cancellation rules are available on the website for reference.
  • The admission schedule may change under unavoidable circumstances or as per directive / instructions from admitting authorities of Somaiya Vidyavihar University. The revised schedule, if any, will be notified on the website.

A provisional seat will be offered based on the merit and availability of seats taken together. A candidate who is offered a provisional seat needs to pay the full fees as applicable as per stipulated deadline, to secure the same.

In case of students whose results are pending, they must furnish the documents within four working days of declaration of result of graduation or equivalent examinations, for admission to be confirmed.

In the case of students whose documents need to be reissued by their respective University or relevant authority, will need to submit an application to the Head of the institution, specifying the time required for such reissue. A maximum period of 30 days will be granted.

If any candidate who has confirmed the admission and chooses to withdraw from the programme of study, can apply for cancellation by submitting a prescribed cancellation form. The deduction of fees will be as follows:

Last date of admission: 

After commencement of the Diploma programme, if a student wants to take a break for certain valid reason, then he/she can do so as per the following norms :

The academic break can be granted to any student at most once during the programme, for the period of a semester or more, with the maximum period of academic one year. The application has to be approved by the Dean.

Eligibility for academic break:

  • Serious personal medical reasons involving hospitalization or serious family issues, on the condition of providing valid medical certificates or relevant documents.
  • Pregnancy/Maternity
 

The Dean will approve the academic break and forward the application of the student to the admission/ department for necessary process.

  • Payment of Fees for the academic break: If the student has informed the Dean regarding academic break before the commencement of the relevant year and not paid the total fees for that year, then if his/her academic break is granted, he/she can pay the total fee (100%) prevalent at that time when he seeks re-admission.
  • If a student wants to take academic break after the commencement of the academic year, but he/she has not attended the classes and if the fees are not paid, then while seeking readmission he/she has to pay the total fee (100%) plus 25% of the total fee as re-admission fee to continue his/her studentship.
  • If the student has paid the total fee for the entire year and then sought the academic break after commencement of that academic year in the middle of semester, he/she has to pay 25% of the total fee prevalent at that time, towards re-admission in subsequent years.
