Diploma in Prakrit Language and Literature

Diploma in Prakrit Language and Literature

Prakrit was one of the earliest and most widely spoken languages of ancient India, especially among the common people, during the pre-Christian centuries. It served as a natural and accessible medium of communication, and over time, developed into a rich literary tradition that spanned from around 200 A.D. to 1200 A.D.

A remarkable body of literature exists in various Prakrit forms—such as Maharashtri, Magadhi, Ardhamagadhi, Paishachi, Pali, Shauraseni, and Apabhramsha—offering deep insights into the cultural, historical, and religious life of early India. Prakrit gained further prominence when spiritual leaders like Mahavira and the Buddha chose it as the language for their discourses, making their teachings accessible to the masses and transforming Prakrit into a respected literary language. Understanding Prakrit is essential for anyone wishing to explore the canonical texts of Jainism and early Buddhism. This diploma program provides a strong foundation in Prakrit language and literature, with a special focus on the religious and philosophical texts that shaped Indian thought for centuries. Designed as a bridge course, this program is ideal for students planning to pursue an M.A. in Jainology and Prakrit Language. It equips learners with the linguistic and historical tools necessary for advanced study in these fields.
