We are pleased to invite you to a 5-day Online Workshop on Ancient Scripts: Brahmi and Sharada.

Brahmi Script is one of the oldest scripts in India. It was used by Asoka and by the rulers of the Satavahana dynasty in the 2nd century AD in their inscriptions. Inscriptions in Brahmi are also found in Southeast Asia and the Central Asian region, attesting to its widespread use as a writing system. Indeed, the Brahmi Script is a forerunner of several writing systems in South Asia.

The Sharada script is a writing system of the Brahmic family of scripts. This script was mainly used to write Sanskrit and Kashmiri in the regions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and the North-Western Frontier Province for centuries and served as a vital link in the chain of communication of ideas, knowledge, and culture. The script is believed to have been evolved from Brahmi around the 9th Century CE. In the initial level of this workshop, students will learn Sharada alphabets and numbers. In the later stage, students will get an opportunity to practice reading Sharada with the help of some manuscripts.
