It is our pleasure to invite you to the special lecture by Dr.Shubh Majumder, (Superintendent of Archaeological Survey of India, Mumbai Circle) at K.J.Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies, on 21st November 2023 at 11 am as part of the World Heritage Week celebration of Archaeological Survey of India Mumbai Circle from November 19 to November 25, 2023.

An initiative of UNESCO, World Heritage Week is celebrated to promote the conservation of culture and heritage. The week–long celebration aims to create awareness about traditions and culture as well as promote the diversity and challenges related to various world-famous heritage sites. It provides an opportunity to explore the various traditions and practices that are passed through generations serving as a gateway to India’s rich culture and history. The celebration also provides a platform to exchange views and perspectives about protecting India’s heritage sites.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Shubha Majumder, presently working as Superintending Archaeologist, at the Archaeological Survey of India, Mumbai Circle.

He is a scholar in the fields of Archaeology, Art, and Iconography. He obtained his Master’s Degree (2006) from the University of Calcutta in Archaeology. He obtained his Post Graduate Diploma in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi in 2009. He was also qualified for U.G.C., J.R.F. in 2009. His Doctoral thesis is on Jainism in Ancient Bengal: A Study on its Archaeology, Art, and Iconography from the Department of Archaeology, University of Calcutta. He has been credited for publishing more than 40 research papers on different aspects of art, iconography, and archaeology of eastern and central India in National and International journals. He has published two books ‘Jaina Heritage of Chharra’ and ‘Jainism in West Bengal: An Archaeological Approach’ and edited a book ‘Pratnadarpan’ published by the Anchalik Itihash O Loksanaskriti Charcha Kendra. He has actively participated in and also conducted excavations and explorations in different parts of India.

He has received the Professor Sudhir Ranjan Das Memorial Prize for the best paper entitled ‘Rajgir an Epicenter of Jaina Art Tradition in Eastern India: An Observation’, presented at the 72nd session of the Indian History Congress, Punjabi University, Patiala, 2011, in the section on Archaeology. In 2015 he received the Jaina Purattava Perana Award for his contribution in the field of Jain Art and Archaeology in eastern India from the Shri Bharatvarshiya Digamber Jain (T.S.) Mahasabha, New Delhi. Further in 2018 he also received the Sanaskriti Sanrakshyak Award for the protection and conservation of the Jaina Heritage in Eastern from the Shri Bharatvarshiya Digamber Jain (T.S.) Mahasabha, Ranchi Branch. In 2020 he received the prestigious title of Purattva Sanaskriti Sanbardhak from the Shri Bharatvarshiya Digamber Jain (T.S.) Mahasabha, New Delhi and Kolkata. In 2022 he received the prestigious award of ‘Professor Sudhir Ranjan Das Smriti Puruskar’ from Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, West Bengal for his contribution to the Art and Archaeology of Bengal.
