Poson Poya Day, the second most significant Buddhist celebration in Sri Lanka after Vesak, is observed on the full moon day of June. This day marks the  occasion when Arahat Mahinda Thero, son of Emperor Ashoka of India, preached the Dhamma to King Devanampiyatissa, converting him and his retinue to Buddhism, thereby establishing Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE. In line with Emperor Ashoka's Dhamma Vijaya policy, Buddhist missionaries were sent to various countries, including Sri Lanka, where Arahat Mahinda Thero led the delegation.

During the Poson period in Sri Lanka, various religious activities such as Sil campaigns, Bodhi Poojas, Dansalas, Poson devotional songs, Poson pandols (toran), and lanterns are organised.

The celebration at the Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai will include a religious sermon, devotional songs, Poson lanterns, and Sri Lankan cultural performances.
